Loading Classes
Choosing the correct access cover loading class is essential for safety, durability and long-term performance.
The right class depends on where the cover is installed, the type of traffic using the area and the loads applied directly to the cover. Pedestrian areas, car parks, industrial yards and access roads can require very different specifications.
FACTA loading classes for fabricated access covers
FACTA classifications are designed specifically for fabricated access covers and take account of slow-moving wheel loads and typical applications.
| FACTA Class | Slow-moving wheel load | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| A | 5 kN | Pedestrian and cycle areas |
| AA | 15 kN | Domestic and very light-duty areas |
| AAA | 25 kN | Cars and light commercial areas |
| B | 50 kN | Car parks and delivery areas |
| C | 65 kN | Industrial and commercial traffic |
| D | 108 kN | Heavy-duty plant areas and access roads |
Galco fabricated steel and recessed covers are available in different FACTA classifications depending on the product and project requirements, including solutions from A through D.
FACTA or EN 124?
FACTA and EN 124 are different classification systems and should not be treated as direct equivalents.
FACTA is particularly relevant to fabricated steel access covers, while EN 124 classifications such as B125, C250 and D400 are commonly associated with cast access covers and gratings.
For example, Galco’s ductile iron access cover range includes B125 and D400 solutions.
The correct standard and class should therefore be selected for the actual product type and installation rather than converting one classification directly into another.
How do you choose the correct loading class?
Consider three things:
Location – Is the cover in a pedestrian area, car park, service road or industrial site?
Traffic – What type of vehicles or equipment will pass over it, and how frequently?
Wheel loads – The total vehicle weight alone does not determine the required class. Concentrated wheel loads and slow-moving industrial traffic can place significantly different demands on a cover. FACTA specifically distinguishes between applications such as car parks and areas used by HGVs or forklifts.
If the application is unusual or the loading conditions are uncertain, the cover should be specified for the individual project.
