Access Covers

Access covers and gully grates can be safety critical. In certain circumstances failure or misuse could lead to injury or loss of life.

We offer high performance range of products from ductile Iron. This is a unique form of iron which has been treated before the casting process to produce an exceptionally strong and durable material with high impact resistance. It has a much superior strength to weight ratio than traditional grey cast iron.

Our products incorporate features that help eliminate these failure mechanisms thus minimising safety issues and optimising installed life cost.

BS EN 124-2:2015 is the key standard for specifying or selecting gully tops and manhole tops made of cast iron.

It categorises the various areas where they can be installed from Group 1 (Class A15), which can only be used by pedestrians and pedal cyclists, through to Group 6 (Class F900), suited to areas imposing high wheel loads, e.g. aircraft pavements. Many of of our products have design features to ensure long-lasting performance especially in areas subject to high-density traffic.

For highways applications, our Group 4 (Class D400) access covers are designed to be compliant to HA104/09 with many including designs which dissipate load substantially through the structure of the product so that it resuls in low stress around the frame and flange – ideal for bedding integrity!

Please also note that D400 products are not suitable for areas subject to vehicles with solid tyres or non-pneumatic suspension such as forklift trucks. For these applications, a Group 6 (Class E600) would be a minimum requirement.
