At Galco’s Dublin facility, steel components go through a two-step process to ensure maximum durability and corrosion resistance.

Step 1: Shot Blasting – Preparing the Steel Surface

Before galvanizing, every piece of steel is shot blasted (Sa 2.5) to roughen the surface and increase its area.

This method is well-known for producing a thicker galvanized coating—adding approximately 50% more thickness, which significantly enhances corrosion protection.

This crucial step often enables Galco to achieve and even exceed the minimum coating thickness of 140 microns, as required by project specifications.

Step 2: Hot-Dip Galvanizing – The Ultimate Protection

After shot blasting, the steel is immersed in a 450°C molten zinc bath, forming a durable, corrosion-resistant coating.

This process:

• Creates a long-lasting protective barrier against rust and environmental damage.
• Extends the steel’s lifespan, reducing maintenance costs.
• Provides an abrasion-resistant finish, hot dip galvanized coatings are made of zinc-iron alloys that are tougher than the original steel and are perfect for demanding industrial applications.
