At Killybegs Harbour in Co. Donegal, Galco supplied Faserfix KS 150 drainage channels as part of the Smooth Point quay extension project. The heavy-duty slotted drainage system helps manage surface water in one of Ireland’s busiest fishing ports. Built for extreme loads and marine conditions, the channels support the long-term performance of this critical harbour infrastructure.
Killybegs Harbour is the largest fishing port in Ireland and a key hub for the national seafood industry. The €10.5 million Smooth Point Pier Extension project delivered a new 120-meter quay development, helping to ease congestion during peak fishing seasons and support the continued growth of the marine sector.
The works, carried out by Sorensen Civil Engineering Ltd., included dredging operations, quay wall construction, and improvements to port infrastructure.
As part of the project, 194 meters of Faserfix KS 150 F900 concrete drainage channel were supplied by Galco to provide reliable surface water management along the quay area.
Challenges and Solutions
Harbour environments present some of the toughest conditions for drainage systems. Heavy vehicle traffic, equipment loads, saltwater exposure, and constant use require infrastructure that can withstand extreme stress.
The Smooth Point extension needed a drainage solution capable of handling heavy loads and harsh marine conditions while maintaining long-term reliability.
The Faserfix KS 150 F900 channel was selected for its strength and durability. Manufactured from fibre-reinforced concrete with basalt fibres, the system provides exceptional structural performance and stability in demanding industrial environments such as ports and harbours.
Why Faserfix KS Drainage Channels?
The Faserfix KS system provided several key advantages for the Killybegs Harbour project:
- Extreme load capacity – rated up to F900 according to EN 1433, ideal for heavy port traffic and machinery.
- High structural strength – fibre-reinforced concrete with basalt fibres provides exceptional durability.
- Maximum stability – extra-thick sidewalls improve resistance to lateral pressure and heavy loads.
- Corrosion resistance – galvanised or stainless steel edge protection performs reliably in marine environments.
- Fast installation – SIDE-LOCK boltless fixing system speeds up installation compared to traditional systems.
- Flexible design options – compatible with multiple grating types for different functional requirements.
- Long service life – built to withstand demanding harbour conditions with minimal maintenance.
Built for Harsh Marine Conditions
For port infrastructure like Killybegs Harbour, drainage systems must work reliably every day under heavy loads and challenging weather conditions.
The Faserfix KS150 channels supplied by Galco provide the strength and durability needed to keep quay surfaces safe and operational. By managing surface water efficiently and withstanding constant use, the system supports the long-term performance of this important harbour expansion.
