The Galvanizing Process: Quick and Reliable

The actual process of dipping steel in molten zinc takes just minutes. However, preparation and post-treatment steps are crucial for the best results.

Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Preparation: Steel is hung on jigs, cleaned, rinsed, and fluxed.
  • Dipping: The steel is dipped in a molten zinc bath at about 450°C.
  • Cooling: After dipping, the steel needs to cool and be removed from the jigs.

These steps typically take only a few hours. In practice, with other ongoing work, the standard turnaround is about 3-5 days, and by special arrangement, it can be as fast as 24 hours.

Hot dip galvanizing is often misunderstood as a lengthy process, but the reality is quite different.

In fact, with proper planning and preparation, your steelwork can be galvanized within 3-5 working days.

Here’s how you can ensure a speedy turnaround for your project:

STEP 1: Communicate About the Workload

The workload of each galvanizing plant can vary day to day and season to season. By contacting us a few days in advance, you can schedule your work into our timetable. This simple step can significantly reduce waiting time.

STEP 2:  Ensure Clean Steelwork

For optimal results, galvanizing requires clean steel. Any contaminants that normal pre-treatment processes can’t remove will need special treatment, which takes extra time. Make sure to remove ID markings, paint, or grease from the steel before sending it in. While rust is not an issue, excessive rust will need extra time to remove.

STEP 3:  Add Correct Vent and Drain Holes

Galvanizing protects both the inside and outside of hollow steel sections, but only if vent and drain holes are correctly placed. These holes are crucial for safe and effective galvanizing. If not provided, our pre-process inspectors will have to add them, extending the processing time.

Hot dip galvanizing is a swift and efficient process, designed to meet the fast-paced needs of fabricators, contractors and specifiers.

With minimal preparation and smart planning, your steelwork can be galvanized and ready within just a few days, not weeks.

This process saves time and money, ensuring your projects stay on track and is durable from the get-go.
