Preserving History: Galvanized Replica of Tusker Rock Lighthouse

Commissioned by Wexford County Council and brought to life by local artist and welder Damian McAleenan, the Tusker Rock Lighthouse replica now graces the Ashfield Cross Roundabout. Hot dip galvanized by Galco Waterford project serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost in various tragedies linked to the lighthouse.

Galvanized Tusker Rock Lighthouse

The Tusker Rock Lighthouse, located off the coast of Wexford, is a monument steeped in history and sorrow. Over the years, numerous lives have been lost in the vicinity of the lighthouse, including 15 construction workers in 1812, a lighthouse keeper in 1941, and 61 people in a plane crash in 1968.

The replica honors these souls with intricate details: 61 notches below the lantern room commemorate those who died in the plane crash, the number 15 on one door memorializes the construction workers’ deaths, and the number 1 on another door recognizes the lighthouse keeper who was killed by the mine.

The project was a labour of love, not just for me but for the community it represents – says Damian McAleenan. – The role of hot-dip galvanizing was crucial in ensuring the longevity and durability of the replica. Collaborating with Galco Waterford was a seamless experience; their expertise in galvanizing provided the foundation for a robust structure that could withstand the elements.
