Channel Drainage Transport & Handling

Transport and handling can have a significant impact on the cost and speed of a channel drainage project.

Channel material, unit weight, delivery access and on-site storage should therefore be considered before installation begins. Lightweight drainage channels can reduce handling requirements, while heavier concrete-based systems may require additional lifting equipment and planning.

Why does channel weight matter?

Different channel drainage materials can have very different transport and handling requirements.

Channel materialTransport & handling considerations
Polypropylene compositeLightweight units can be easier to unload, carry and position on site
Polymer concreteHeavier sections may require additional handling or lifting equipment
Fibre-reinforced concreteHigh structural stability, but greater unit weight must be considered during delivery and installation
Stainless steelWeight varies considerably depending on channel size and construction

Lightweight polypropylene systems can simplify site handling and, depending on the product, reduce the need for mechanical lifting equipment.

For more information, compare the main channel drainage materials before selecting a system.

Planning drainage delivery

Good delivery planning can help avoid unnecessary site delays.

Before ordering, confirm the channel quantities, accessories and outlet components required for each drainage run. Delivery access should also be checked, particularly on restricted urban sites or projects where storage space is limited.

Where possible, organise materials so that the channels required first are easily accessible when installation begins.

Handling and storing drainage channels on site

Drainage products should remain secure and protected until installation.

Avoid dropping or dragging channel sections, gratings and accessories. Pallets should be placed on stable ground and positioned away from active vehicle routes where they could be damaged.

Gratings, outlets, end caps and other smaller components should be kept with the corresponding drainage system to reduce the risk of missing parts during installation.

Always follow the handling and storage instructions for the specific product.

Transport should be considered during specification

Transport is not usually the main reason for selecting a drainage system, but it can influence the overall project cost.

A heavier channel may provide the required characteristics for one application, while a lightweight composite system can offer advantages where fast installation, difficult site access or manual handling are important considerations.

The final choice should balance hydraulic capacity, load class, installation requirements, material and logistics rather than weight alone.

Frequently asked questions

Are lightweight drainage channels easier to install?

They can be. Lower unit weight generally makes channels easier to move and position, particularly where access for lifting equipment is restricted.

Can drainage channels be stored outdoors?

Many drainage products are designed for external use, but they should still be stored securely and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions before installation.

Do concrete drainage channels require lifting equipment?

It depends on the dimensions and weight of the individual product. Heavier units may require mechanical lifting or additional handling equipment.

Should gratings be transported separately?

This depends on the product. Some systems arrive pre-assembled, while others have separate gratings and accessories. Components should remain protected and organised until installation.
